Ford Focus (98 - 04)

The Focus was something of a revolution for Ford and set a new standard in small-family cars with its daring, sharp design, handling and use of technology. It quickly became one of the most popular cars on the road here in Ireland as families and younger people bought it in their droves. It had the looks, the quality of chassis, practicality, reliability, safety and comfort. The cabin had the design and materials to make it feel like an upmarket car. And it was quite roomy with a decent boot. There is a good breadth of engines with the sizzling ST170 2.0-litre the pick of the bunch. Developing 170bhp, and 196nm of torque, it has a top speed of 134mph and can do the benchmark 0-60 in 7.9 seconds.  But there are some far more practical and economical engines too. Still in demand on the used-car market.

Look out for

•  Known to suffer with the odd electrical glitch; make sure everything works

What we like

•  Probably the best all round car in its class

•  It’s easy and enjoyable to drive

•  Doesn’t cost a fortune to buy and run

•  The cabin has plenty of room

•  Great driving positions

•  Decent sized boot

What we don't like

•  Earlier models are disappointing in terms of standard kit

•  Leg room in the back is not as generous as other cars in class
